Update Reunion Information

I have updated the blog with a picture of the homestead and of Adam & Annamary. More updates to come. Please feel free to add a comment. Also the committee would like to encourage each and every family member to attend the fun filled Reunion weekend. For those of you who have not sent in your replys please do so as soon as possible and for those of you who have already sent in your replys " a big Thank-you" Lets take some time to come together as a family to reminisce, have fun and meet all the cousins by the dozens!

The Family History

Adam Klein was the son of Michael and Caroline (Kovelle) Klein. He was born on January 3, 1890. He came to Canada with his parents, his brothers, Edward, Thomas, Jacob and sisters Frances, Barbara and Magdeline from Alsace, Russia on April 3, 1902.

Arrival in Canada
The Zieglers, Uhrichs, Merks, Chris Lawrence and John Klein came to Canada on the same ship and the same time as did Michael Klein. They came to Canada on the ship Arcadia and docked at Halifax, Nova Scotia. From there they came to Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Michael Klein homesteaded in the Francis area, just south of the present Joe Klein farm. Many families moved out of their villages when the Russian rulers became too oppressive and denied them a decent living and a certain amount of prosperity. Their freedom to live comfortably was curtailed by the greedy authorities, so these people moved out, not on account of poverty, but to get away from a corrupt government that was spreading across that country in the 1900’s.

The Homestead
Adam Klein homesteaded the S.E.1/4 of Sec. 30-T-14-R.14-W2nd, then bought the S.W.1/4 of Sec.29-T.14-R.-14-W2nd, where he built his wooden frame house and a mud building which was used for the cattle.
Adam Klein had no schooling. There weren’t any schools here when they settled in Saskatchewan, nor would they have had time. The children had to help work on the farm, the prairie had to be broken, homes built and wells dug so fresh water could be had.

Anna Mary Ripplinger was born on December 20, 1893, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Kuntz) Ripplinger. She came to Canada with her parents, seven brothers, Frank, Joe, Steve, Frank, Peter, Valentine, John, Siriak and two sisters, Magdeline and Mary, from Alsace, Russia on April 3, 1903. They came to Canada on the ship Arcadia and docked at Halifax, Nova Scotia. They then proceeded on to Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Her parents homesteaded near Kendal, Saskatchewan. Annamary Klein was nine years old when they came to Canada. She had one year of schooling in Europe and received no education in Canada, as there were no schools in Saskatchewan when they established themselves here. There was nothing but open prairie around Odessa when they arrived.

The Wedding
On October 28, 1912 Adam and Annamary were married in Blumenfeld (a country church) by Fr. Janson. They moved to the farm Adam owned on Sec.29-T.-14-R.-14-W2nd, where he had already built a house, a mud building and had a well dug.

Life on the Farm
He started farming with horses and a one shear breaking plow, horse drawn drill and a small disc. Later a 12” and 14” gang plow was used. Michael Uhrich and Edward Klein (a brother and brother-in-law) had a threshing machine who did the threshing for him.
Adam Klein owned a Model T Ford; when it broke down he used it for parts and bought another Model T Ford.
Eleven children were born on this farm.
In the fall of 1927 Adam bought more land, then in the fall of 1928 the family moved to the Frank Rissling farm, two miles north of their previous home. Seven more children were born to them.
In 1928 Leopold Linz worked for Adam Klein, for three years as a hired hand. Adam Klein was his first employer when he came to Canada from Europe. In 1936 Adam Klein bought his first Case tractor. During the summers they lived in the summer kitchen; in the winter they’d move back into the large frame house.

Hardships
Adam and Anna Mary Klein endured many hardships, often money was very scarce, as crops were poor and the prices for the products they sold were low. There were years they had very little grain to sell. Besides growing crops they raised livestock, hogs, ducks and chickens. Josephine and Christine contacted tuberculosis and spent some time in the Fort San. Chris recovered and was able to leave; Josy passed away in the Fort San after spending five years there. Those were very hard and depressing times for Adam and Anna Mary.

Gardening, Canning & Baking
Anna Mary grew a large garden to provide her family with vegetables during the winter. Her cellar was well stocked with canned meats and vegetables. Anna Mary baked her own bread, made cheese and butter. She always had loaves of bread either rising or freshly baked on the table. On butchering day, sausage and head cheese were made. Many times meat and sausage were canned. They also cured their own meat.

The Faith
When they lived on their first farm, they attended the Blumenfeld Church, a country church to the west of them, in the Sedley district. Fr. Janssen was the pastor of Sedley, and was entrusted with the mission of Blumenfeld. Eleven of their children were baptized at Blumenfeld and three were buried there. By the time Adam and Annamary moved to the Rissling farm there was a church in Odessa that they attended faithfully. In 1946, a Building Fund Drive was conducted, to collect funds for a new church in Odessa; Adam Klein was one of the fifteen men who went to great trouble to solicit donations. Adam belonged to the Men's Club when it was organized in 1948. Annamary also joined the Alter Society and later the Catholic Women’s League
In 1950 Adam and Annamary retired to Odessa. Their sons Joe and Felix stayed on the farm.

Farewell
On September 13, 1968 Adam passed away in the Montmartre Union Hospital after suffering a stroke. Anna Mary enjoyed life in her home in Odessa until she went into the Indian Head long term care facility. She passed away in Indian Head on August 11, 1994. Her son Jack lived with her in Odessa until she went into the Indian Head long term care facility.

A Tribute
They left quite the legacy behind, what a tribute to them and all their hard work. The history on our grandparents is just amazing, it is pretty interesting. Quoted by Shirley!

Reunion Committee Minutes

Minutes - Klein Family Reunion 3rd Meeting March 13, 2008

Meeting held at the home of Annette & Leonard Gaetz.
Pins: We will order pins in April, we need to give the company 10 weeks for the order. It was decided that we will have Odessa printed on the Klein Coat of Arms not Germany.

Ice Cream Truck: It was decided that we will have an ice cream truck at the reunion at no charge to us, all proceeds from the sale will go to the people running the truck.

Lorenz is MC and Charlene has agreed to say Grace

Finish off deciding on Supper Meal: Roast beef, mashed potatoes, pasta salad, mixed vegetable, and dessert trifle.

Photographer: Annette will ask Syd.

Reunion Books: Putting on hold. We will try and get as much information in the Klein Reunion website, which will be a lot less work. Shirley will type information about Grandfather and Grandmother Klein from the Odessa Heritage book and send to Brenda to be put on the website. Pictures will also be put on the website and anyone wanting this information can print it for themselves.

Collage of Pictures: Each family is responsible to create their own collage of pictures, to be posted in the hall.

Family tree sheets handed out to all the families: Eva will handout the family tree sheets and Shirley will had the sheets to Sadie and Pauline’s family.

Family members are to pass the word on to their families to get their registrations in.

Family colors were picked for each family, it is up to the families to decide how and if they want to wear their color to identify their family. We picked the colors from a hat to make it fair.

Go over permit information: A community event permit is for 12 hours per day for 3 days. The cost of the permit is $75.00 and Glen will pick up the permit 15 days before the reunion, Glen will also pick up the alcohol for the reunion. Annette will send a letter from the village office.
Weiner roast on Friday night: Open fire has been approved through the town of Odessa.

Meeting was held at Dennis & Shirley Lang's. Lunch was served after the plans get underway.

- Club to handle breakfast (decided on pancakes, sausage, whipped cream and fruit at a cost of $5.00 or $6.00 for adults, 10 & under $3.00 and 5 & under $1.00)

- Pins (Vivian got some prices on pins; we will keep the prices of the pins under $5.00 per pin) (Armand will look into some other companies and try and get better prices.

- Account has been opened up and Annette has put $20.00 into the account and cheques have been ordered
